Unpopular Ports, Want Them Back?
I know some islands are less popular than others, and one of them is Caracas. But I have to say, even though we were there right after a coup, I thoroughly enjoyed my non island port of call. Some people chose not to get off the ship, and that amazed me. Imagine being in South America, and not seeing it:( Another island I enjoyed, was Martinique, we just walked the town shopped a bit in the French department store. Were the people as welcoming as on other islands, no, but I still enjoyed a bit of the French sensability, while some other passengers, NEVER again. In Caracas we docked at La Guira, and took the bus through the mountains, and saw amazing things. Too bad we had a low cloud cover, the mountains were amazing. The ranchitos [homes] were, precariously placed on the sides of the mountain, looking like they could fall with a stiff breeze. The sides of the mountain were covered in green, not grass, but garbage bags! It was explained to us, that once a month, the goverment came by, and picked it all up, to have it start all over again! My trip to the Murano glass factory, was spent in the ladies room line, while my experience actually in the bathroom, was a Lucy & Ethyl episode! We also saw a colonial house, or I should say Bruce did. My feet were so swollen I couldn't walk up that hill:( I stayed on the bus, on the very last bench seat, sitting over the motor, which they left running for the hour...let's just say, I am lucky to be alive;) Lunch, and a tour of the city, I loved to be in the cosmopolitan atmosphere, and my head was on swivle! A bit of change from palm trees and beaches. Would you like to see these, or other islands come back on cruise itineraries? St. Croix, is another ships hardly call on anymore... If you sailed to Caracas or Martinique, what didn't you like, did you stay on the ship? Would you be upset if Jamacia was pulled, if and when Cuba becomes a port of call?
